A Song in the Night

“..and the multitude rose up together against them (the brethren) and the magistrates rent off their clothes and commanded to beat them. And when they had laid many stripes upon them they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely: who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. And at

midnight Paul and Silas PRAYED and SANG PRAISES unto God: and the prisoners heard them.” (Acts 16:22-25).

Now those of us who have ever had birds as pets can tell you, when you have a caged bird and you want it to stop singing, chirping or whistling you cover the cage with a blanket so as to have it very dark and very quiet within and then you will have NO songs! Alas, not these caged birds, not these who have been shown just how much we must suffer for the name and cause of Christ Jesus our Lord. Throw them in a cage or prison and beat them and hold their feet fast with stocks and you still get a lovely and amazing song of grace, a song in the night indeed!! Why? Because Psalms 42:8 tells us: “Yet the Lord will command His loving kindness in the daytime and in the NIGHT His song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life”.

So what is this combination that is so needful for you and I in any time of horrible crises: prayer and praise! I suppose as in all things Grace and in the kingdom of Grace our mind is taken off of ourselves and placed squarely and securely upon the ever caring and ever keeping Lord Jesus. Simplicity brother, singularity sister; that's what we need and in Him that's what we have; therefore look to no other.
