Of Princeton, New Jersey
Psalm 42: 1: As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. 2: My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? 3: My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? 4: When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

Acts 10: 30: And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, 31: And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. 32: Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.
Cornelius lived in a time of transition when the Mosaic worship was fading away and Christ had ushered in the day of grace. He worshipped God in spirit and in truth according to the Law of Moses as he looked for the promised Messiah.
Yet, we have good reason to believe that Cornelius suspected his Redeemer had already come. Peter said, That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him (V37, 38.)
Cornelius hungered and thirsted to know if this was truly his Redeemer. He lost all regard for his earthly necessary food till he had Christ the Lord. He turned from all the appetites of the flesh, brought his body into subjection to the inner spirit which rules the believer and prayed, casting all his care on God to provide this one thing needful. This is the heart and soul of spiritual fasting and prayer.
The will of God in all things is to glorify his Son. Whatever temporal thing God takes from us or whatever sickness he lays upon us, he knows we have need of those things. But God withholds that for which our flesh lusts, turning our double-minds into a single ambition for Christ till our temporal need no longer makes up our petition before him. When he has brought us to truly realize that in spite of the job or the health or the financial help we lack, it is CHRIST WE MUST HAVE then we have reached the end purpose for which God gave the trial. When our prayer is for Christ then our prayer is according to God's will.
As he fills our hearts with a fresh, joyful view of our Redeemer we wonder why we ever felt so stricken by the lack of those earthly needs when the King of heaven and earth, who shed his blood to buy us to himself, does only that which is best for us. He shall never leave us nor forsake us, and how thankful we are to him that he will never let us forget it. The songwriter said it so beautifully in the following song:
If Solomon for wisdom prayed,
(It was because) The Lord before had made him wise;
Else he another choice had made,
And asked for what the worldlings prize
Thus he invites his people still,
But first instructs them how to choose,
Then bids them ask what'er they will,
Assured that he will not refuse.
And dost thou say, "Ask what thou wilt"?
Lord, I would seize the golden hour;
I pray to be released from guilt,
And freed from sin and Satan's power.
More of thy presence, Lord, impart,
More of thy image let me bear;
Erect thy throne within my heart
And reign without a rival there.
Give me to read my pardon sealed,
And from thy joy to draw my strength;
To have thy matchless love revealed
In all its height, and breadth and length.
Grant these requests, I ask no more,
But to thy care the rest resign;
Sick or in health, or rich or poor,
All will be well if thou art mine.
