Ruth 1:6: Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread. 7: Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah. Naomi was led by her husband away from God, away from his people, into a land of idolatry. Such was the case with all God's elect when Adam sinned in the garden. How would Naomi be saved? How shall you?
Scripture says little about whether or not her husband or her two sons were chosen children of God, but without a doubt, Naomi was. Because the Lord loved her, he would not allow her to continue in that land of idolatry, away from his people, and away from the place where he had exalted his name.
Yet, as is the case with all those he loves, the Lord must first strip them of everything they hold dear or else they will not let go of death. The Lord took away the husband Naomi once served. She hung around in Moab because of her two sons--Mahlon and Chilion--whose names mean "sickness" and "weakness." But the Lord removed them because they would only bring her more sickness and consumption. By the hand of the Lord, the sweetness of Moab was now turned bitter to Naomi. Then the Lord sent a person declaring to Naomi something far better--how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread.
The Lord has visited his people. The Bread which he has freely given is Christ Jesus the Lord. The Lord declared in John 6: 50: [I am] the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die....51: I am the living bread which came down from heaven:...if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever:...and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The bread that he gave is his body which he voluntarily gave up--This is my body which is given for you. He gave his life to preserve the life of his people. The law held his people for ransom but he paid the ransom with his own life so his people could live. Romans 7:4: Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. And bring forth fruit is exactly what Naomi did.
Ruth 1:6: Then she arose... This is always the result when the Lord speaks in power to the heart of sinners through his gospel. The Lord said, the words I speak unto you they are spirit and they are life. What an illustration: Then [Naomi] arose!
May God exercise such grace and power in us that we might bring forth this fruit; that we might choose this day whom we will serve. Only then will you arise and return to the house of Bread.
