As long as we refuse to submit to the Lord and trust him alone, the result will always be more and more rebellion, sorrow, and suffering.

Because of a famine in Bethelem-judah Elimelech moved his family to a land of idolatry where they could continue living in the lifestyle to which they had grown accustomed. He only intended it to be there temporarily--to sojourn--in the land of Moab.

Yet, any time we turn from the Lord, forsake our brethren and lean to our own understanding we are headed for trouble. Elimelech died. Following the example which their father taught them by his actions--his sons rebelled against the direct command of the Lord God and took them wives of the women of Moab and died also both of them. Naomi was left alone with two daughters in law with no place to worship the Lord, no brethren to help her, and no way to provide for herself. This is an example of the sad but sure results of self-righteousness.

The Lord Jesus Christ is crystal clear. We can not serve ourselves and God. If we attempt to save our lives by trusting our profession, our understanding of scriptures, or the works which we imagine have made us holy then we shall lose our lives. Any sinner who attempts to save his own life by leaning to his own understanding during times of ease or times of trial, by refusing to let go of worldly riches, by attempting to keep one foot in the pew and one foot in the world will lose his life. We must take sides with God against ourselves, trusting Christ Jesus alone for all our standing and salvation, confessing that all we are is sin and that it is God alone who justifies whomsoever he will (Luk 16:13; Mat 16: 24-26; Deu 7: 2-4; 2 Cor 6: 14-18.)

Until we believe God in our hearts, enough to boldly proclaim the glory of his Son as he says he is in scripture, enough to commit ourselves to the furtherance of his gospel, enough to give ourselves for the good of our brethren then all we are is compromise and falsehood. Let God be true and every man liar for he is and all men are.
