December 22: Hope for North Korea
TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 2008

It's December 22. One of my favorite days of the year. Yesterday was the shortest day. Today there will be more minutes of light. And tomorrow even more. In my strange way of thinking, spring is already here. The light has dawned. In almost no time the world will be new. God promised the seasons would remain constant. And this year will be like last. Spring will come. Spring has come. No wonder the ancients believed that their god, the sun, was born around this time. No wonder the Christian "church" played into the mystery and agreed that this just must have been the time when the Son, Jesus, was born also. Though Jesus Himself left us no clear evidence about the time of His birth. A special Mass was held, and voila! Christ-mass was born too.

But I digress. As old folks normally do. Someone surely must be waiting for the North Korea tie-in. Yes? Here it comes. Before December 22 is symbolic for me of the winter of humanity when all is bleak and dark and worse and worse. North Korea experiences this winter all year long, as does every other nation to some extent. Things are not right in the world. The snow of sin covers the planet. Cold hearts drive us to take cover. We are not free. And we think this condition will last forever. Things seem to get worse every day.

But there is hope. December 22 means hope . I see the snow, but in my mind I see spring birds flying over it. A bluebird has made its nest in my front-yard tree that has no leaves! The flowers rise, though my neighbors can't see them as they slush toward their car and begin to sweep off the night's offering.

Rotting and starving in a Hoeryong concentration camp or a Yoduk or a Chongjin, a man in whom Christ lives suddenly says, "Hey, this is not my final state. Winter shall not be always. Christ shall come. This regime shall fall. It will not always snow and be cold. Nothing but the newness of an eternal spring is headed my way. Don't you feel it, fellow-prisoner, do you know what I know? It's the 22nd! Christ is here and is coming!"

And so Lord Jesus, our prayer this winter's day is that hope will be firmly planted in the hearts of your suffering loved ones in North Korea. May they see the promises of God and believe them. May the joy of what is coming be sufficient to give them the grace to endure what is here. And if in Your perfect plan it is best that North Korea experience part of its deliverance before You come, what joy that would bring to the earth. But set Your people free one way or the other. And may we who remember the prisoners keep remembering them without fail, relating to their pain, bearing their cross, hoping with them for Your return and Your deliverance.Amen.
