ONE BROKEN ALL BROKEN

James 2: 8: If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: 9: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. 10: For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. 11: For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. 12: So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. 13:For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

In this illustration, James shows that when rebuked, it is useless to run to the law in an attempt to prove our innocence. For instance, if one shows respect to the rich while neglecting the poor, he may attempt to justify himself by saying that his over-indulgence was merely meant in the spirit of obeying the command of the Lord Jesus which says, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself." The Spirit of God bears out in this passage that this is merely self-justification and hypocrisy.

The law of God shows no mercy, only judgment. Any time we attempt to justify our rebellion by the law, we turn from the perfect law of our Liberator, Christ Jesus, and we turn to ourselves and the dead letter of the law. If we forsake our own mercy in an attempt to justify ourselves before the law, the sentence will always be, "Guilty!"

No believer boasts of having fulfilled the law of God in him self. We know that to break one is to break them all. So when convicted in our hearts of a sin like showing prejudice toward one at the expense of another, by God's grace the believer will fall at God's feet, confessing his sin. He will flee to his offended brother asking forgiveness. One who has experienced God's free mercy rejoices against dragging men before the law to accuse them. One who has experienced mercy rejoices to show mercy. A believer rejoices that the judgment due him, fell on Christ Jesus and therefore God's mercy abounds toward him. He knows that he shall be judged by the law of liberty. Therefore the love of God manifest in his free grace and mercy makes believers delight in the law of God in the inward man. It is the only motivator which causes us to mortify our members through the power of the Holy Spirit. God be thanked.
