Counselling Interpretation 14

Having filtered out a lot of unhelpful language used by the world's counsellors, it is now time to ask some broad questions about our counselee.
  • 1. Rather than asking what psychological label best fits this counselee, ask what biblical category he/she fits into. Broad categories include the following:
  • a. People who believe in or reject Jesus as the Son of God (John 3:18, 36)
  • b. Christian people who are immature, like babies, who are swept away by anything or everything that happens to come their way, or Christian people who have become mature through disciplined application of the word of God (Hebrews 5:12-14, Ephesians 4:13-15)
  • c. People who are
  • i. Idle-warn them
  • ii. Timid-encourage them
  • iii. Weak-help them
  • iv. Anyone-be patient with them (1 Thessalonians 5:14) John MacArthur has an excellent sermon on this text "Dealing With Problem People"
  • d. People who are wise or foolish, builders or breakers (Proverbs 10:1, 8, 14:1.
  • 2. As you have examined the information, where does this counselee stand on the scale between desiring to change and resisting change? Do they have any understanding of the process of biblical change? Do they know how change takes place?
  • 3. Are there factors you should consider that present complications or that compound the problem? One such issue could be a counselee's attempts to deal with the problem in the past, but by using a wrong method of change, resulting in discouraging failure.
  • 4. Does the data suggest that there may be reason to suspect an organic cause? (The Christian Counselor's Medical Desk Reference by Dr. Bob Smith is very helpful in this regard.)
  • 5. From your gathering of information from this counselee, what, in view of all of this information, is the best way to approach this counselee?
  • 6. What (as indicated by the data) is the greatest need of the counselee at this point?
  • 7. Does your data explain why it is that the counselee has failed to resolve the problem until now?
  • 8. Does your data indicate what it is that has brought the counselee to you for help at this particular time?
  • 9. What does the data suggest the counselee is expecting out of these counselling sessions?
