Harvest and Thanksgiving! These words bring us feelings of peace and plenty. They remind us of bountiful gatherings of food, family, and friends. A verse that I pray often is Psalm 119:17, “Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live, and keep thy word.” I want a rich relationship with the Lord that yields useful fruit and produces a life filled with contentment and service. What is the path to plenty for a Christian? As with most things, we can find a prescription for that in the book of Proverbs!
“My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.” (Prov. 3:1-10)
There is no better time than the harvest season to recognize God’s law of sowing and reaping. “But this I say, he which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.” (2 Cor. 9:6) “To him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward.” (Prov. 11:18b) When we remember His Word, follow His direction, and humble our hearts before Him, we will reap the reward of obedience. “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” (Col. 2:6-7)
The amazing truth revealed through Scripture, Creation, and personal experience is that the God we serve is good, giving, and overflowing with abundant mercies.
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)
“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Psa. 16:11)
Just as the Psalmist pleaded with God to deal bountifully with him according to His Word, we pray to that same God! “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us…” (Eph. 3:20)
What a wonderful reason for us to abound with thanksgiving! (V.K.S.)
