MEDITATIONS IN THE PSALMS (9-15-24)
[An outline of the Psalm
A good devotional study when using the scriptures indicated]
Psalm 37:1-3, Study 1, The Wicked Prosper

Psalm 37, A Psalm of David: Precepts (to regulate behavior) of the Lord, Why the wicked prosper. Written at the end of David’s life, “I have been young, and now am old; …” (v.25): making it more valuable due to his many experiences.
“The great riddle of the prosperity of the wicked and the affliction of the righteous, which has perplexed so many, is here dealt with in the light of the future; and fretfulness and repining are most impressively forbidden. It is a Psalm in which the LORD hushes most sweetly the too common repining of His people, and calms their minds as to His present dealings with His own chosen flock, and the wolves by which they are surrounded. It contains eight great precepts, is twice illustrated by autobiographical statements, and abounds in remarkable contrast.
“The Psalm can barely be divided into considerable sections. It resembles a chapter of the book of Proverbs, most of the verses being complete in themselves. It is an alphabetical Psalm: in somewhat broken order, the first letter of the verse follows the Hebrew alphabet. This might not only have been a poetical invention, but a help to memory. The reader is requested to read the Psalm through without comment before he turns to our exposition.” (CHS)
“Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.” To ‘fret’ is to worry, to have the heart burn and to fume, and become vexed. We have a natural tendency to resent it when we see the ungodly riding in a new Mercedes and we’re still driving an old Ford. It seems tough to carnal judgment that the best merit shall go to dogs while we the children get the crumbs. But we must be careful, “neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.” When the soul is so cast down that there is not an ounce of joy in anything, we may be tempted to question when we look across the hedge (Psa.73). My dear ones, envying the unconverted prosperous is like the fat bull with his ribbons and trophies as he is led to the slaughter-house.
V2, “Soon cut down” the scythe of death is being sharpened, the evildoer soon shall be cut down and his glory dried up. But pastor, “Is not death coming for the believer?” No, life is coming for us. Within every believer there is a living and incorruptible seed which lives and abides forever.
V3, “Trust in the LORD,” here is the second precept; the first is “fret not.” Faith cures fretting (Matt.6:24-34). You want to know how to be truly successful and happy in life and have hope for eternity: let me give you the Bible’s simple formula, Pro.3:1-18. “And do good,” true faith is actively obedient. “So shall thou dwell in the land,” the Canaan Land of the Covenant. Not a geographical location, but a state and frame of peace and contentment. “And verily thou shalt be fed (shepherded),” let the world have their dainties, we have “meat that they know not of” (Heb.11:8-16). ~~Terry Worthan, 1938-2022
