MEDITATIONS IN THE PSALMS (7-14-24)
[An outline of the Psalm
A good devotional study when using the scriptures indicated]
Psalm 33:12-22
Everything in this Psalm rings with praise to Jehovah our God. 1) We are exhorted to praise Him for the Excellency of His character vs. 4-5. 2) We are to behold the majesty of His work in creation vs. 6-7. 3) We are bid to fear Him for the accomplishment in providence vs. 8-11.
In verse 12 His people are proclaimed blessed. This is generally applied in a politico-religious way. Here I think it must be interpreted in its highest form, spiritual I Pet. 2:7-10 “to them who believe …”. What a happiness to have an interest in one greater than ourselves. What is at the bottom of this happiness? ELECTION! “The people whom He hath chosen.” Here is the rule, “None take Jehovah to be their God, till He takes them to be His people” (CHS). “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you” (John 15:16). “Chosen for His own inheritance!” What an ennobling choice! Chosen to the highest estate known to man.
In verses 13-19 the omniscience, omnipotence, and care of His people is celebrated. “The LORD looketh down from heaven.” My soul! What an awesome thought! “He beholdeth ALL the sons of men”; (Ps.11:4; 66:7; Jer. 32:17-19). The Russian Astronaut said on his return that he saw “neither God nor angel” while in outer space; therefore he concluded that He must not be. No, he did not see God, but God saw him. Vs.14 is a double reminder of the same truth!
Vs. 15, “He fashioneth their hearts alike.” Not that all men are fashioned or created alike in constitution and disposition, but all men alike owe their existence to God. No man independently possesses life. His purpose of observation, “He considereth their works.” His present consideration foretokens a future judgment. A judgment in which His thought will be measured out in eternal happiness or eternal woe.
Vs. 16, there is no success against omnipotence, 2 Chron.14:8-12, “Lord it is noting for You to help, with those who have no power.” Mortal power is a fiction, and they who trust in it are fools. When God gets ready to overthrow, He does so. God can smite a nation with famine and destroy it one by one, and at the same time spare a widow and her son and a prophet with a morsel of meal. “A mighty man is not delivered by much strength.” When it comes time to die, he dies just like the weakling. We talk much about the strength of our armies, and the strength of our nation. The LORD alone has strength.
Vs.17, “A horse is a vain thing for safety” (Ps.20:7): “Neither shall he deliver any by his great strength”; (I Kings 21:17-19; 22:1, 29-39). What about Pharaoh with great horses and war chariots? Sennacherib and his great calvary? Why they were no match for one angel.
Vs. 18, “Behold etc”, the eye of the Lord is upon His people to protect them; while upon their enemy to destroy them. “Upon them … to deliver their soul from death.” The Lord’s hand goes with His eye, “And to keep them alive in famine.” Shall we not also conclude with verses 20-22, “let Your mercy be upon us.” ~WTW
