Let's review a few key facts. No one and I do mean no one will ever mistake me for an athlete. A kayak oh sure they look fun but when you've never been alone on one ... stories happen. We had gone on our family vacation. My honey had booked us an Airbnb. The river ran right in front of it. My honey wanted to go kayaking. Trying to be a good wife, I wanted to tag along. All is well except the only time I've been in one is WITH him. Fine, I'll get in by myself but I'm pretty sure this ain't gonna end well. My honey knows I'm a bit scared and he assures me I will not drown because after all I have a life vest on. Let's park right here for a moment .... raise your paddle I mean your hand that if there is a way you could drown while wearing a life vest you would end up being that 'one'. ME TOO. The fact "drowning" is part of the coversation. Bother. Oh yeah and my son was there too and he just smiled and waved as I floated out. It took a bit but in my mind I had reached deep down inside and had found my inner Sacagawea. Uh no! I'm pretty sure the houses along the bank the occupants were determining if they should call for medical assistance to the chubby lady who appeared to be having a seizure - that would be me and Sacagawea. Ok we did have a nice time and it was pretty and I didn't drown and my boys didn't become motherless but reality didn't match what was in my head. Positive note - my fears were unfounded. I indeed had a life vest on. Obviously, if I had been in danger my husband would have rescued me, not too sure about our boy who may have been too involved recording my 'seizure' :-). However, my triumphal vision in my head wasn't exactly right either. No one is going to hire me as an instructor. Amusing? Yes. Friends, it is 2024; 2023 may have had its share of triumphs and failures but I can't look back and sulk or revel in any of them. Your life vest (salvation) is still never going to fail you. God promises us once saved always saved; but what are you going to do with your paddle? Stand on the embankment and watch everyone else because you're too afraid. Look, I didn't win a prize that vacation for greatest paddler but I did get in and I kept going. Get back in the kayak; purpose in your mind today 'I will read a chapter in the Bible and I will spend 5 minutes in prayer'. Then challenge yourself to pray more, serve more, faithfully attend a church that preaches God's Word, and give the Lord every area of your life. If you are ever in the Brogue, PA neck of the woods please stop by and join us in worship. Keep paddling :-)
