The priest replied, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here, wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want to take it for yourself, then take it, for there isn’t another one here.” “There’s none like it!” David said. “Give it to me.”
The word of the Lord will do the conquest. There is none like it. The sword of the Spirit is mighty.
David has no other weapon. Neither does our Lord Jesus. He'll use the sword of the Spirit, or he'll use nothing. He'll never conquer hearts by other methods.
First, it's "the sword of Goliath," whom David killed. He slaughtered him in the valley, and the Lord Jesus, by his humiliation, suffered to defeat Satan. He took the word of God from the Devil [the message of condemnation and the bondage of dead works], because his death conquered death. Hebrews 2:14-15, "Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery." Therefore, it's now revealed how God can justify sinners. God's word is now for us, rather than against.
Secondly, there is none other! "There isn't another one here." The Lord Jesus does not use human tricks. He doesn't use man's strength or ingenuity. He doesn't use persuasive speech. He reveals the gospel to someone who makes it known. He glorifies himself by reliance upon the word as God's power. It's not man's power of self reliance!
God will use nothing else, so get EVERYTHING ELSE OUT OF YOUR MIND! Don't rely on your charm or eloquence. Add nothing of your own. Preach the gospel in the text. Open it, and reveal what's there!
Thirdly, "there is none like it." Oh, the power of the preached word! Oh, how mighty it truly is! Oh, how it's able to save the sinner!
It can convict the conscience and bring us down. It humbles us before God, and shows that we are sinners. It lifts up his perfections and his mercies. It tells us he's sovereign, and puts us in the right place: at his feet in faith. It's able to bring joy and peace. Forgiveness and reconciliation are FELT, because the Spirit touches the heart by the word. It discerns us, judges us, and quickens us. It shapes our life!
Oh, the sword is mighty to produce true Christians, and if we believe it, then use it as it is.
Finally, this sword is for everybody, not just preachers. Simply tell what the Lord's told you!
