"Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine;"
The love of the Lord Jesus Christ is the best thing that there is. There's no feeling higher than intimacy in his love. Let us seek this, and be about this fellowship all of our days. Out of it will flow service and joy.
First,"Let him kiss me." Don't think that we control this blazing love. We don't rule when he appears, but we watch and pray, trusting his goodness, and seeking his fellowship.
Psalms 63:1, "O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. "
We give up our lives to experience this love, drawing near to him daily. We know this is our highest priority. Without this love we have the shell but not the heart of true religion. We're empty and unsatisfied. We're not content.
Let us acknowledge that we need Christ's love more than we need to do for him. We need the fuel for passion and sincerity. We need comfort within.
Acknowledge that he will give this to you, and seek it intensely. Come to possess this above all else. Make this first priority!
Secondly, it's the kisses of his mouth. He's the One who died for our sins. He's the One that makes us acceptable. He's the reason God hears us.
The poor sinner, lost and ruined in unbelief, is given life. He sees Jesus sat down at God's right hand to bless him! He sees the One whom he's offended angry no more, but pouring in grace to heal his wounds. He hears a voice of mercy, tenderness, and compassion. This is the One who loves me where I am and as I am. I'm in weakness and unworthiness, and he KISSES ME HERE because of his character and love. He loves the unworthy, hypocrite, and the vile! He loves the offender!
This is the One who kisses us. His love does not need us to climb up. He takes us from valley to mountain!
Thirdly, Christ's love is, "better than wine." It's the best thing there is, because it comforts and burns the heart.
Luke 24:32, "They said to each other, Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?"
This love allows us to COMMUNE with God, which is the highest fellowship, because God knows how to give peace. God's love in Christ gives us friendship and power to obey; it is speaking terms with God, so that we have the highest relationship and satisfaction within. It is hope, faith, and love ablaze. Joy feels too big for our chests. Contentment makes us laugh at adversity. We are walking with God! Who can disturb us? When he gives peace, nothing can trouble us. We are thankful and secure.
This love causes us to do good works. It pours out upon others, like the perfume that filled the house, when poured upon Jesus. Others may despise it, but we do good works of thankfulness and praise. We love Christ, now, sincerely. This is greater than preaching. This is having the sermon in your heart!
Thank God, there's something better than this world and its dreariness. Something better than emptiness exists.
Finally, this love is everything. Don't be deceived by other things. This love - not service, holiness, or any other thing - is highest priority!
