"I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those You have given Me, because they are Yours. Everything I have is Yours, and everything You have is Mine, and I have been glorified in them." vs9-10
The Lord Jesus is glorified by those the Father has given Him.
First, we were given to Christ before He made the WORLD. He was responsible to redeem us. Genesis 44:32, "Your servant became responsible [surety] to my father for the boy, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will always bear the guilt for sinning against you, my father.’" Having satisfied God's justice, however, He's glorified in saving us completely: We were once sinners in the lowest degradation, deceived by Satan, worshiping false gods, but now we've been brought into the light [Col 2:12-13].
Paradise awaits us, where we'll be served by God and serve Him forever in glorified holiness and happiness. Luke 12:37, "Those slaves the master will find alert when he comes will be blessed. I assure you: He will get ready, have them recline at the table, then come and serve them." This is the greatest privilege, even higher than elect angels, because we've been redeemed from sin, rather than kept from sinning [1 Tim 5:21]. We've overcome the world.
Secondly, this privilege is not for all men. Jesus did not pray for the world. John 17:9, "I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those You have given Me, because they are Yours." He knew those whom the Father gave Him. He wept for the world and called the world, but He didn't die for the world in the way that He redeemed the elect and made atonement for sins. Hebrews 9:12, "He entered the most holy place once for all [times], not by the blood of goats and calves, but by His own blood, having obtained eternal redemption."
The transaction between the Father and Son is the SATISFACTION of justice. Therefore, the elect come to the atonement made for them, while the world rejects it!
Heed this call, lest He pass you by. Do not play with Him. The gospel is in your hands, but He's determined your destiny. Don't think that you'll have the willpower to choose Him later. Romans 9:18, "So then, He shows mercy to those He wants to, and He hardens those He wants to harden." Remember, He hardened Pharaoh's heart, and He can harden you, so that you rush into destruction, blaspheming, and saying, “Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.” He can make obedience sweet, or leave you to your foolishness.
Thirdly, He's glorified in His people, so let's spend our lives reaching them. This is the mission that's filled with joy, as we put aside petty arguments, and humble ourselves to preach the gospel, showing Christlike character to all. Genesis 45:24, "So Joseph sent his brothers on their way, and as they were leaving, he said to them, 'Don’t argue on the way.'” Let us forgive, and go on diligently as forgiven children, praying for our brothers, and living to make Christ known.
This is the only life and peace. We can't be self willed and be happy. Titus 1:7, "For the overseer must be beyond reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not overindulging in wine, not a bully, not greedy for money," God has a good purpose for us, so let us receive it.
Finally, God's glorified in our being made like Christ. Let us seek it, and lead others!
