"In that day you will not ask Me anything. I assure you: Anything you ask the Father in My name, He will give you."
The Lord Jesus gives us a promise: anything that we ask the Father in His name, He will do for us.
First, this promise is for believers. You have placed your trust in Christ. You're trusting Him for deliverance from wrath, the power and joy of obedience, and for heaven's bliss. You're trusting Him to save you completely and to fulfill His good promise of eternal life. You're trusting the blood He shed and the power of His Spirit, who He has earned for us. You believe His word, including the commands and warnings. You approach the Father in His name, which is His merit to make you live according to His will. Holiness, happiness, and heaven are ours through Christ.
Secondly, the promise is qualified. We don't get whatever we want to hurt someone else. We don't get to be God and rule the world. We don't get a million things that we can ask for in the flesh. 1 John 5:14, “Now this is the confidence we have before Him: Whenever we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” We do get to do God's will and obey Him. We do get the power and peace of submission. We do learn by experience that obedience is good, as He gives us everything needful to honor Him [Phil 4:9]. We do get to persevere in the faith and bring God glory beyond what we can ask or think. We do get to enjoy every spiritual blessing, including God's power, more and more. Ephesians 1:19, “And what is the immeasurable greatness of His power to us who believe, according to the working of His vast strength.” We do get the joy that no man takes away and the peace that surpasses understanding. We get to imitate Paul’s actions and therefore have his contentment. Philippians 4:9, “Do what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.” We get deep soul satisfaction in living for the gospel. All of these things have been promised, and they are ours.
Thirdly, many do not like this verse in context, because they have carnal hearts and believe false promises. They have itching ears to hear what the flesh craves, because they don't have the Spirit. They don't want to suffer, and they don't care how bereft of reality: they just want false promises and willfully believe lies! 2 Timothy 4:3-4, “For the time will come when they will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear something new. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.”
Look at the inheritance as it truly is. If that's not enough, then check yourself, before you miss out on everything. Take what God is giving, and you will be satisfied. Trust Him.
Finally, the people who receive this promise have a DEEP DISSATISFACTION with sin. They hate the burden, and they long to be holy. A guilty conscience is unbearable, and they find no other remedy but believing on Christ. Power over sin is their greatest yearning. They want obedience more than life itself. Truly, these people ask for whatever they want, and they get it. They want to glorify Christ and submit!
