“So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God."
Believers are heirs through God. We have all the privileges of the inheritance, because we are sons.
First, ws were sons before regeneration, but we did not know it [vs1-6].
Galatians 4:1
Now I say that as long as the heir is a child, he differs in no way from a slave, though he is the owner of everything.
Galatians 4:3
In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elemental forces of the world.
Galatians 4:6
And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!”
We were kept under the Law, trying to earn God's favor. Now, however, we are free from the Law to enjoy the riches of Christ.
Secondly, we are the heirs of all things. It doesn't matter what you don't have in this world. You have everything in Christ, including redemption. Ephesians 1:7 "We have redemption in Him through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace." You have the pledge of the Spirit in your heart, which is the guarantee of the heavenly blessings [Eph 1:14]. You have full acceptance with God and power over sin. You have the joy and peace of believing, even the contentment of Christ. You have everything spiritual that a saved person can have, because you have Jesus Christ. You're GOD'S CHILD as much as anyone who's ever lived. You are lovely and pure in His sight, you have the Spirit to teach you, and you have growth in grace beyond what you can ask or think [Eph 3:20-21]. You are fully loved by God and have been since eternity. You have useful gifts to help His church and access to Him in prayer [Eph 3:12]. You have holiness and righteousness within you, God's promises, and confidence. You have everything it means to walk with God.
Thirdly, let's use this inheritance wisely. Don't go back to the Law and bondage. Don't leave the gospel to earn what's already yours. Don't go back to self-righteousness, pride, and deception. Stay in grace and the goodness of the Lord. Stay believing in Christ.
Two things happened today that disturbed me. One, the father of a co-worker in the gospel was kidnapped. It will work for his son's good and advance the kingdom, but we pray for delivering mercy. We have the right to trust God and not be moved [Psalms 46:10-11]. We are submissive to His wisdom, because we know we are children of grace. Secondly, another saint lost her unsaved father and now her job. She trusts His sovereignty, because she's not condemned, and she can learn lessons of submission and obedience in her Master's class, because He's done it to bring her into higher realms in Him.
Oh, look to the grace of your Father. Avoid silly slogans that dishonor God with fake promises of temporal things. Hold onto your inheritance and pray. Ask Him to be merciful and fully bow, knowing that He's been eternally merciful to you already. He does no wrong to His children and all is in love. Know that you have strength to bear everything through Christ. Use God's promises to steady you.
Finally, this inheritance is the gospel that we preach. It's not law and grace, but grace only. It's not this world and a spiritual kingdom, but it's the spiritual kingdom that glorifies God and feeds the soul.
Beware. This kingdom FACES OPPOSITION, and people will hate you for preaching it. Galatians 4:16 "Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?" Proud flesh will oppose you, the worldly will despise you, but God's people will receive you. Friends will become enemies, but others will be brought to God, because the kingdom is unnatural to the flesh and something that must be learned.
Stay in the grace of Christ and teach others. Suffer boldly and with kindness. Do not be bitter against them or seek great things for yourself [Jer 46:5]. God's revealed Christ, so that you can trust Him, and show others in word and deed!
