I am an avid sports fan. As a child, I would watch every sporting event that was on TV then head outdoors and pretend that I was playing in the actual event. I played many imaginary football, basketball and baseball games in my parents backyard and driveway. Sadly though, I was never a gifted athlete and never made it as an athlete. I do, however, participate as a sports official in recreation and High school sports. I officiate volleyball, football, basketball, basketball, baseball and girls fast pitch softball. Yesterday, I attended my nieces swim meet and as I watched the children swim, here are some of my thoughts regarding the beauty of athletics.
First, athletics displays the Glory of God in how He created the human body to do extraordinary things. Genesis 1:27 says, "God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." Psalms 139:13-15 says, "I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well." It is God that created the human body to be able to perform the great feats that we see on a daily basis on the court, the field, the pool and also to be able to officiate these athletic events and witness them first-hand.
Secondly, athletics helps build character and takes commitment. It takes days, hours and minutes of practice and commitment for one to excel. My favorite NBA player is Larry Byrd.I loved watching him play and I will still from time to time watch highlights of his game on You Tube. At first glance, you would not be very impressed. Yes, he's tall at 6'9", but he was of average speed and could not jump very high. Yet, during his NBA career, he averaged 24.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game. He won three NBA championships and named the NBA MVP three times. What made him different and unique? He was committed and had a drive to be the best he could be.
Thirdly, athletics instills a never say die attitude in the individual. Yesterday, I witnessed 6 year old children swim against 12 year old children. Yes, they finished last. Did they get discouraged? I am sure some did. But it began to teach them a very important character trait-perseverance. It takes character to persevere continue on when it seems that all is lost. Fight the Fight and don't quit!
Parents, encourage your child or children to participate in athletics. It helps build character, the importance of being involved in a team, and being committed to a sporting event and team. Coaches, encourage and teach those that have been placed under your care to participate, be committed to practice and to the team. Officials, be fair in your calls and enjoy the interaction between the players, coaches and fellow officials. |
