"PRAYER" LD5, John 17, & II Samuel 7:18ff What can a pastor say bout prayer? Prayer is not something that can be given of a pastor or a person. It is communion and fellowship that belong alone to the child of God. They have this gift inherently as a child of God! Our lives are prayerful. There is much instruction however that we can take from the word of God regarding prayer. Through prayer the child of God gets his stamina. The devil also hates this. We need to see the principals lest our prayers become carnal to the point where God does not listen to them.
The need: Why must the child of God pray? This is a subjective question. They must pray because it is the CHIEF part of thankfulness with only a small beginning of that new life while still in this body and flesh. Our flesh tries to crowd out prayer. Sometimes due to our sinful inclinations. God requires it of us we are told and also God will give His grace and Spirit only to those who desire them of Him. The child of God needs prayer to be sustained through the various situations of life. Our prayers also change as our situations change. We change our prayers and maybe this should be said instead of prayers changing things! It is the breath and native air of the child of God! It is our spiritual PULSE!
Requisites: There are certain principals of prayer:
1. Prayer begins in the heart.
2. Prayer is to God.
3. Prayer is in and through our Lord Jesus Christ and should be confident!
Prayer is always through our Lord Jesus Christ as there is NO spiritual life apart from Him. Our prayer is ALWAYS to GOD but through Christ who blazes the way to our approach to the living God! We have the model of this in the Lord's prayer. Prayer always entails Jesus though to pray ONLY to Jesus is wrong. It is GOD to whom we pray! What would God think of us praying to Jesus as He sits on His throne who is the intercessor for us to the FATHER?! And we pray to God who has revealed Himself to us in His word. How many times do we hear "that's not the God who I pray to?" God has revealed Himself in His word! We do NOT pray for God to change His council (which stands by the way) but we pray to God who has revealed Himself in all His glorious virtues! The whole of our life (spiritual and in regards to our earthly existence) must be in prayer and compromise it! All carnality is abhorring to God however. Prayer is NOT a wish list. When you get rid of all carnality and put it aside then we can address the needs of this existence so that all may be to the glory of God!
Fruit: Our spiritual breath and native air. Focus on fellowship with GOD!
Do we pray properly so all of it is to the glory of God?
