The 8th Commandment! We are not dealing with a moral standard as we find in the world, but here we deal with the love of GOD in us. We do not engage because it is simply utilitarian, but for the Glory of GOD! This commandment is very short, but its impact is HUGE as it entails the neighbor who we deal with daily in one way or another. Three things we look at:
Basis: The fundamental and underlying benefit of this commandment is that God and God alone is the SOLE owner of everything! The ONLY proprietor! What can we add to His fold that isn't already His? In the old testament Israel was made rich with gold and silver from the Egyptians in order to reinvest it into the temple to God's glory. Why is stealing a problem then? We too find covetousness in our hearts and we too reach out for those things that God has given to another. Remember we are only stewards with regards to those things we hold in this world! We own only considering God and His glory in that ownership! Read I Samuel....Hannah's prayer...It is of the Lord that you receive and give by circumstance in life like birth, death, by talents, opportunities for merchandising and He gives those distinctions and they are from the Lord who distributes to His will and desire! All that we have and all that we are belong to the Lord!
Practice: How must we do this? The temptation is to steal living in a world of materialism with the devil himself whispering in our ears until we touch that which God has given to the neighbor! Like the catechism says "God brands wicket tricks and devices also." It tells us now we are to labor and what is profitable and what FAIR profit is! Buy, sell, work, and labor in this world asking yourself the questions "how can this profit my neighbor?" In that love of the neighbor God will prosper as He did with Israel and as He did NOT prosper them when they robbed Him. Manage and invest...I should say REINVEST it into HIM!
Peace: The world is confused. The child of God understands that God prospers as this is a pilgrims journey that they may be disposed of to God's glory! With the world it is a matter of greed, power, status, etc, but the child of God realizes that it is only means for the end. Let the world have it. We realize that it will all be ours in the end in Christ! And when we live knowing such, we will have great peace.....
