And when the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, the food of his table, the seating of his officials, and the attendance of his servants, and their clothing, his cupbearers, and their clothing, and his burnt offerings that he offered at the house of the LORD, there was no more breath in her. 2 Chronicles 9:3-4
James tells us, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him” (Jas 1:5). Moreover, he says that we must ask in faith, without doubting or double-mindedness (Jas 1:6-8). The queen of Sheba represents a type of believing Christian who seeks to gain wisdom from Christ, just as Solomon, the son of King David, represents a type of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of David, who is Messiah and Prince of Peace. It is by the Holy Spirit’s illumination that we find true wisdom because He testifies of Christ Jesus (John 15:26), for the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding (Isa 11:2). When He opens the eyes of wisdom-seekers like you and me, we see Christ’s glorious church, the house that He had built (Matt 16:18); we see also the food of His table, the daily bread of God’s Word and the will of the Father, which is food indeed (Matt 4:4; John 4:34); we delight in the honor Jesus has given redeemed sinners saved by grace in the seating of His officials with Him in heavenly places in Christ (Eph 2:6); we also rejoice in the attendance of His servants who lay down their lives for Christ Jesus and for one another (John 15:13; 1 Jn 3:16), who are also His cupbearers, serving Jesus and His guests with the blessed wine of the gospel testament of His shed blood (1 Cor 10:16); we see with heavenly eyes our clothing, having put on the righteousness of Christ (Rom 13:14); and moreover, and most importantly, we see His burnt offering, laying down His own life and incarnate body, with which He offered at the house of the LORD upon Calvary’s tree (Heb 10:10). Having seen all this, it must take our breath away, as it did to the Sheban queen. Hallelujah! What a breathtaking Savior!
