Guinea fowl and chickens can't see in the dark - fact. Safest place for fowl at night is in an enclosed coop - fact. It is more pleasant to sleep out in the open - fact, well at least I assume. Personally I want to be safe. Before bed, we confirm doors are locked. If I relied on simply my dog to keep us safe, I might as well lay out our valuables for easier access because our dog is adorable and we love him to death but as for protecting, NO. Lassie, could never be played by my dog. Hence the doors are locked. I have a little grey hen. Her name is 'Shadow', could I have been a bit more creative well.... Shadow has decided recently that she wants to roost on the chicken run door. This door opens to the run where the hens walk to go to the coop. The door remains open all day to allow access for them to lay their eggs. I close it at night to keep them safe. We have a routine now. I come at dusk, shoosh her, she hops on the roof then to the ground, goes behind me (wrong direction), and then turns and goes into the coop where she knows full well she's to be. If I left the door open, she would be relatively safe but the rest of the girls would be in more danger. Shadow's recent decision to do her own thing poses a risk to every hen around her. Remember that because we'll come back to her... My guineas on the other hand roost on the garden gate door. They are definitely more flighty than my hens are and never wanted the coop. They are in their prime. Everthing was fine until 2 nights ago. In the night, a fox came and took both of my guinea hens. The next day I found feathers and evidence that they had been chased and caught in the confines of the garden fence. I just about cried. I realize this is nature but whenever I have something die it makes me so sad. If they had simply gone in the coop, they would have survived at least in the night. They lived out what 'Shadow' doesn't quite grasp - actions and decisions have consequences. Sometimes it causes us pain but more often than not it affects those around us as well. Most do not fall in to deep sin without first taking small steps of disobedience. Pastor Starr preached on 9/26/21 am service "What To Remember When You Are Slipping". Friend, did you slip this morning and choose sleep over devotions? Yard work over attending church? Be careful you may be slipping.
