And He said, “You will rejoice no more,
O you oppressed virgin daughter of Sidon.
Arise, cross over to Cyprus;
There also you will have no rest.”
We'll have no rest if we challenge the eternal God. Our sin will find us out. It's better to confess our sins than to war against Him, because He gives no rest to the wicked [Is 57:20-21.]
Let us be justified by faith, walking in imputed righteousness, or we’ll never have peace with God. We can never be good enough to reach the perfection that He requires in thought, word, and deed. We must rely upon Jesus Christ and the perfection of His cross, when He was forsaken to take away our sins, paying the full condemnation for our transgressions. Let us trust Him for power, because we’ll never rest while living in sin. He will give us the Spirit because we are justified by faith. Let us trust Him in perseverance. We are tempted to draw back, but there’s no rest there, so we press forward believing that He’s able to keep us -- “Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time [1 Pet 1:5].” We trust Him in tribulation because murmuring and self service does no good, so we BOW to His wisdom, love, and trust His sovereign goodness. He can turn “no,” into “yes,” if yes is more needful to His glory and our good [Phil 4:6]. Do not walk in unbelief. There's no rest there!
The wicked will have no rest, day or night in the lake of fire, but God’s wrath will burn forever, without diminishing! “He too will drink the wine of God’s anger, poured undiluted into the cup of His wrath. And he will be tormented in fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever. Day and night there is no rest for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name [ [Rev 14:10-11].” There'll be no ease in the pit, nothing but weeping, discomfort, and gnashing of teeth. They'll cry out in anguish, because they didn't cry out for mercy today. They didn’t care about rest in Christ: they were blind to their real need.
Finally, are you without rest? “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls [Matt 11:28-29].” He will give you rest, if you are weary and burdened. He’ll alleviate the guilt, the fear of wrath, and He’ll give us communion with God. You’ll find Him loving, merciful, and kind. He will help us walk with God in surprising joy and pleasure. There is, however, no peace or rest to the wicked, ever!
