The Bible teaches us that there are two paths - one that leads to life and the other that leads do death. The Word of God wants us to think about where we are going. The path we choose is taking us to a destination. In our text, Solomon describes the path of the wicked as one of darkness. This describes the pathway that is not enlightened by God's Word.
The wicked walk in the darkness of sin. Their way leads to eternal darkness, ruin and misery. Over and over again, Solomon warns his children not to follow in the footsteps or fellowship with those who walk in darkness and take pleasure in wickedness. Those who walk in light should not take pleasure in or find satisfaction in sin. We should always remember that the path of the wicked is a dangerous way. Matthew Henry writes - They fall into sin, but are not aware which way the temptation came by which they were overthrown, and therefore know not how to avoid it the next time. The way of the wicked is hard, but due the darkness they walk in, they cannot figure out what is bringing their misery.
Solomon is encouraging us to stay on the path of the upright, by warning us of the dangers found on the pathway of the wicked. Does the path you are on bring the peaceable fruit of righteousness? The path that leads to Christ is straight; therefore, forego the crooked paths that lead to more and more darkness.
