As a parent, have you ever considered - what should you teach your children? The scriptures are clear that we should train our children up in the fear and admonition of the Lord. But many of us have not considered what that entails. Or, we just hope the youth minister will cover it for us. However, that kind of apathetic view towards children explains why we are not seeing the blessing of God upon our children. The statistics are clear, we are losing our children (and have been for decades) to the world. Solomon is shedding some light on the problem. As a father, it is my responsibility to train my children.
Within our text today, we see what we are responsible to teach. We are to teach our children wisdom and lead them on the right paths. This texts gives us two principles: first we teach, then second we lead. This means we not only teach wisdom, but live out wisdom in front of our children. For example, if I teach my children to deal honestly with my neighbor, but they see me cheat my neighbor, then I have failed my responsibility. And, more importantly, I am not training my children to fear the Lord.
Furthermore, we need to be careful not to take our children down the crooked paths of worldliness and carnality. Rather we need to teach them Biblical principles such as - whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things (Philippians 4;8). Christian parents need to realize our children are our responsibility to train in the fear and admonition of the Lord. Unbelievers do not have the ability or the desire to accomplish a task that God has delegated to the parent. If we desire to see God's blessings upon our children, then we need to come back to this principle of teaching our children wisdom and leading them down the right paths (those paths defined by God's Word)
