Do Not Forsake Wisdom; Love Her - Proverbs 4:6

Solomon personifies wisdom for us today and represents her as a guardian and companion, who, if not forsaken, will always be faithful; and if loved, she will always be a protector. In what way does wisdom bestow these benefits?

According to the New Testament, Christ is the Wisdom of God. We demonstrate we despise wisdom by forsaking all that Christ holds dear. For example, we forsake Christ when we forsake the assembly of His church, forsake His ministers, forsake His ambassadors, forsake His ordinances and the Word. Nominal believers forsake Him by compromising with the world (Don't forget James' words - Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? James 4:4). To forsake Christ (Wisdom) is a very great evil. When you think about it, forsaking Christ is against our own interest and yields dangerous consequences.

Finally, to love Wisdom (to love Christ) means we love Him for all the excellencies and perfections of His nature. Think about the love He has shown His people. He demonstrates His love towards us in that He suffered for us. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus is not only a manifestation of His love, but the wisdom of God to deal with the consequences of our sin. Therefore, as Christ has not forsaken us, we should not forsake Him. As Christ has loved us, we should love Him. And to love Him means we keep His commands (John 14:15), which is the practical application of wisdom.
