Wisdom teaches us not to envy the violent man. Our culture looks up to those who get things done through violence. The entertainment industry markets the action hero (the one who gets vindication through violence). Marketing the action hero would not work if there wasn't something within us that gravitates towards the violent man. Consider the riots where individuals destroyed property and even took over a court house through violence. Many within the land not only justified their behavior, but applauded it.
One of the most consistent themes taught within the Bible is - do not envy the lawless. The Psalmist gives us the reason why; God will cut them down like the mown grass (Psalm 38:1-7). Rather we are to emulate the One who sought out peace through the humility of the cross. As we meditate on this text, we should answer an important question - Who do we desire to emulate? God has given a picture of godliness preserved in the Bible. He preserves the actions of Christ, so we would emulate His example. We should not emulate the violent man, but learn the ways of the One who walked in humility and sacrifice.
