Where a Scholar Found Comfort
1 Timothy 1:15, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” John Selden (1584 – 1654) was an English scholar. He was expert in England's ancient laws and constitution and was also a scholar of Jewish law. He was reckoned in 1644 as "the chief of learned men reputed in this land."
Near the end of his life that much read learned man had this to say. “I have taken much pains to know everything that was esteemed worth knowing amongst men; but with all my disquisitions and reading, nothing now remains with me to comfort me, at the close of life, but this passage of St. Paul, 'It is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.' "
Let us too find our solace in this comfort of the Gospel.
