Our verse today repeats the theme of the book - the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Those who desire wisdom cannot overlook this point. If we truly desire wisdom, the first thing we have to acknowledge and possess is the fear of the Lord. This is the first step to gaining understanding. The first step in spiritual maturity is to learn to bow the neck, bow the heart, and to come low before God. If we do not have fear or reverence for God, you can never obtain wisdom.
How do we show proper fear and reverence for God? We embrace His Word (His revelation) and submit to its instructions. We refuse to commit the sin of rationalism. This is where we put our reason above the Word of God. Rather, our reason is a tool that God gives us to bring under His Word. Furthermore, to display the fear of the Lord means we are going to avoid embracing an enlightenment mentality. There are many within the church who believe they can find God and reason to truth separate from the Word of God. Recognize this sinful attitude is rampant within the church and is the enemy of wisdom.
If we desire to possess wisdom, then we fear God by bringing every area of our lives under HIs dominion.
