Bush To Veto 'Hate Crimes' Bill WASHINGTON - President Bush is ready to veto a contentious hate crimes bill that was attached last week to a massive defense spending bill, said the White House on Tuesday. The Senate had attached the hate crimes legislation to the high-priority defense spending bill - which includes funding for the Iraq War - in a political maneuver to pressure Bush to pass the amendment. However, the White House said Bush will not sign the hate crimes bill into law. "The president has said overwhelmingly that these are two separate issues - that they should not be combined; and the president has reiterated his commitment to vetoing the hate crimes provision," said White House spokesman Tim Goeglein on Tuesday, according to OneNewsNow.
Christians Consider Third-Party Effort Alarmed at the chance that the Republican party might pick Rudolph Giuliani as its presidential nominee despite his support for abortion rights, a coalition of influential Christian conservatives is threatening to back a third-party candidate in an attempt to stop him. The group making the threat, which came together Saturday in Salt Lake City during a break-away gathering during a meeting of the secretive Council for National Policy, includes Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family, who is perhaps the most influential of the group, as well as Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council, the direct mail pioneer Richard Viguerie and dozens of other politically-oriented conservative Christians, participants said.
Study: The Protestant Work Ethic The Protestant work ethic does exist - and it results in higher employment rates in countries where the reformed religion dominates, it was claimed last night. According to research conducted by the University of Bath, predominantly Protestant countries - such as the UK, America, Denmark, Sweden and Norway - have a more successful employment rate than countries where other religions are practised by the majority. The study - published in the American Journal of Economics and Sociology this month - is based on information from 80 countries. It also reveals that female employment rates are approximately 11 per cent points higher in Protestant countries.

Free AudioBook: Life of David Brainerd The Life of David Brainerd by America's greatest theologian, Jonathan Edwards, is an inspiring tale. Edwards edited the journal of Brainerd, which has become this book, one of the great missionary stories of all time. The honesty of Brainerd as he struggles and rejoices in his work is profoundly human. To receive your free copy of the latest "Christian News and Views" (delivered weekly, free, via email) simply sign-up (by typing your email address) under the "Subscribe" button, located on the right hand tool bar of the www.callingfortruth.org web site.
