“He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.” vs10
The filling or fulfilling of all things is Christ's eternal purpose - that He’d ascend to God’s right hand, having given His life a ransom, so that He can give gifts unto many.
“When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.” vs8
This purpose of grace in Christ is established by the resurrection but happens through the ascension. It is at God’s right hand where Christ rules now and sends the Spirit.
Years ago, I read, “The Ascended Lord,” by Rolfe Barnard and was struck by the beauty of Christ’s victory. It is absolute. All things are working for the good of His people, and the Lord is saving the church. He, like Darius and Artaxerxes, pictured as kings who helped Israel, is ruling in the heavens to save the church. We inherit victory, not a doubtful fear, when we trust Christ.
Have you received your gifts? What are you doing for Christ?
“But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” vs7
Some say, “I raise my family,” but that is not enough. You have gifts to serve the church and advance Christ to the world.
Some say, “I don’t know my gifts.” Look at Christ, be filled with joy, and ask Him. Make your whole life about serving God, which is bringing others to Christ, and you will be full. He will show you how to do it, and give you the power.
To operate IN YOUR GIFTS is the highest life imaginable. I would not wish preaching on anyone, except someone who is called, then the more that you do it for God’s glory, the more of God you will enjoy.
We are blessed to serve the Master with gifts that He’s given us! We are not proud, but we serve Him, pointing all eyes and attention to the One who is worthy - the One who did the work for us to be saved.
