"God Triune!" Lord's Day 8 of Catechism and Isaiah 61
The truth of the Trinity is paramount and is found throughout our confessions in belief that God is one in being and 3 in persons and is a matter of faith...explainable but inexplicable! God reveals Himself in 3 persons in His work. The Father in creation, the Son in redemption, and in our sanctification in the work of the Holy Spirit within us. Scripture is not wanting on this topic yet does not spell it out to us as it is God's revelation and not a "text book."
Incomprehensible: A true "mystery" that cannot be fully comprehended. We are dealing with God who is the incomprehensible One. "Unto whom will ye liken me?" Like His virtues which we can discuss but cannot fully comprehend. (Eternity for example.) So we are not surprised that we are left wanting to comprehend when we deal with the Trinity or Triune God! The church seems to stand still on this as we cannot add to what we know. He is THREE personalities so to speak in ONE being who say "I" without any confusion and in perfect harmony with one will. We can never have explained to our satisfaction as we are dealing with God. We have a covenant God whose fellowship within His own being is seen in His relationship with His people. If He was one God where would be the fellowship and communion?
Revealed: Although scripture does not point out specifically "the Trinity" it speaks often of it. "Let US make man in OUR own image." This is scripture that you and I believe to be the entire and infallible Word of God! "The Lord says to my Lord sit thou at my right hand till I make thy enemies thy footstool..." This referencing Christ's position in glory. "The Spirit of the Father is upon me." The Lord Jesus Christ is baptized by His own blood and that Father speaks from Heaven. The Son is baptized and the Holy Spirit comes down as a dove. THREE distinct persons and distinct in their work YET ONE in being in the Triune God! The Son in His trinity assumes human flesh yet is very God even as the Holy Spirit comes as comforter to do His work! Scripture speaks of it often as God Triune. It is a matter of FAITH and there is no question about it! Those things we confess and believe regarding the triune God and is exactly how we know and experience it. God the Father stands in the foreground in creation, the Son in redemption as the Word became flesh, and the Spirit that comes to continue His work...all as they work as the Triune God having His distinct personality come to the fore!
Experienced: Can we fathom it or comprehend it? No. Never!.....YET...we believe it by faith as it is revealed to us throughout Scripture.
