Putting On The Lord Jesus Christ

“But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ…” (Romans 13.14)
-

There is a difference between a costume and a disguise. A costume is designed to entertain or please the viewer, but a disguise is designed to deceive the viewer and generally for evil purposes. An actor may wear a costume for his part in a movie, but there is no deception in it, for we know who he really is. His costume merely helps us enter into the story and thus, better enjoy the play or movie. But a thief will purposefully hide his identity by a disguise that he may better pull off his burglary with impunity.

When believers “put on the Lord Jesus Christ,” it is a costume, and there is no deception in it – those who see us know who we really are. But those who put on their own righteousness are wearing a disguise for they are trying to hide who they really are and give the impression that they are truly righteous.

When we wear the disguise of self-righteousness, we are erecting a wall of deception between us and those around us – a wall that says, “Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou.” (Isaiah 65.5) We become useless to those around us and we become bitter hermits for we have enclosed ourselves in a lie. This makes us live in fear that someone will see through the disguise and we will be found out.

But, when we put on the Lord Jesus Christ, we deceive no one; we merely bring to the surface what the grace of God has worked in our hearts. This Divine costume does not repel others, but draws them in. It says, “Draw near to me, for I am as you are.” In this costume, we need have no fear of discovery, for we are not trying to hide anything. Wearing Christ makes us more pleasing to look at while not fooling anyone as to our true nature. It is like the plain girl who has dressed up for the Prom, we are startled at her beauty, for we know who she really is, and find it hard to reconcile our former image of her with what stands before us. So it is with those who have put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Their true identity is not hidden – we know who they are - but their beauty is undeniable, and thus we know it is not their own but the beauty of the Lord upon them.
