Who Caused This Evil On Us?

"And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah" (Jonah 1: 7).

By casting lots to determine who was to blame, the mariner’s confessed that someone on board the ship was guilty before God. Yet none of them were willing to admit that they, personally, were guilty. The mariners not only deserved the tempest but God’s eternal damnation. Yet, they looked to blame someone else rather than themselves. This is the self-righteous nature of every child born in Adam, religious or otherwise.

Natural man will admit he is a sinner only to the degree that he leaves room to save himself. He will not confess that he is totally worthy of God’s eternal wrath. If he did that then he must confess that salvation is entirely dependent upon the grace of God alone, and not his own works. A sinner who believes himself only half-ruined never knows a thing about the all sufficient grace of God.

A true sinner is one that has been made to see that his sin is against God and God alone. When a believer sees that his rebellion is against none other than God, he truly believes himself to be the worst of all sinners. Being made willing by God, such a wretch willingly confesses that salvation is beyond him, except God’s free favor in Christ Jesus pulls him from the pit. From that day forward he no longer sees himself as growing more righteous but continually confesses "O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" while at the same time rejoicing "I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord." --Clay Curtis
