God Said It, That Is Enough
There is a well-known saying regarding the Word of God which goes something like this: "God said it, I believe it and that settles it." That ridiculous second line of the statement gives us some insight into the attitude of fallen man toward the Scriptures. Men readily embrace the "I believe it" mentality and foolishly conclude that their faith somehow or other validates the Bible. O how man wants to get "I" into the things of God. Be it understood by all, our belief of the Word of God (faith is a gift of grace!) in no way settles the Scriptures. God’s Word is settled, it stands secure and perfect, whether we believe or not. "For ever, O LORD, Thy word is settled in heaven" (Psalm 119:89). Man’s belief does not make more certain nor does it confirm what God has said. God’s Word is not offered for our consideration. His Word is not put forth as divine suggestions of what we ought to do and how we ought to live. This book is a declaration of the holy character of our Creator and Sovereign, the sinfulness of all mankind and God’s eternal purpose of grace in the salvation of a multitude of sinners through the person and work of His only begotten Son. The book before you is the Word of God. "God said it and that settles it!" May the Lord give us grace to believe what He has said and to rest in that One by whom He has said it for eternal salvation.
