“So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and there was food every day for Elijah and the woman and her household. The jar of flour was not exhausted and the jug of oil did not run dry, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through Elijah.” vs15-16
God is going to be faithful, and we may trust what He says. In hard times and difficulty, He is the Sovereign Saving God.
First, do not fear your circumstances, when you have God on your side. Elijah and the widow had nothing but God’s word, and it is sufficient.
“Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her. “Go and do as you have said. But first make me a small cake of bread from what you have, and bring it out to me. Afterward, make some for yourself and your son, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be exhausted and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain upon the face of the earth.’ ” vs13-14
God commanded the ravens to feed Elijah, and then told him about the widow woman [vs8-9]. Elijah knew God’s word as sure, and so did this widow, because she cast herself upon it in obedience!
We may safely obey God, doing all that He has said without the fear of man, and He will show up. If you put your faith in Christ, you’ll see Him faithful.
Secondly, we must believe before we see!
“Go and do as you have said. But first make me a small cake of bread from what you have, and bring it out to me. Afterward, make some for yourself and your son, vs13
You and I will never experience the power of believing until we believe, which is casting ourselves upon Jesus Christ, as Lord, for salvation. There is no holding back here: We must believe that He’s worthy of obedience and His gospel is true before we ever taste the power and the joy. We must believe IN OUR CIRCUMSTANCES, if we’ll have the joy now. We can’t wait until everything is settled to trust in God. Faith does not walk by sight, but it is rewarded.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” [2 Cor 5:7]
Christ has strength, if you only believe, and He’ll carry you throughout your day. We are so used to carrying our burdens that we do not trust Him, but let us go to Him and say, “Carry me.”
Thirdly, the comfort of the Lord is supernatural!
“There was food every day for Elijah and the woman and her household. The jar of flour was not exhausted and the jug of oil did not run dry,”
How can this woman, her household, and Elijah eat from so little for so long? How can God provide strength to obey, so that we utterly live BEYOND OURSELVES? It is because of the power of the Spirit: it is not mind over matter or human excellence; it is a Supernatural God giving His power and pleasure to men.
He is with us tangibly, and it is real. Read the Christians of history and see that they believed God, then believe Him also, for yourself, as One who has not changed.
Finally, we have the great privilege of believing God: Let us take Him at the gospel.
