Proverbs 6:20-23
INTRODUCTION: In v.22, the Bible does three things for us. First, “When thou goest, it shall lead thee…” We should constantly seek its guidance for it will lead us in the highway of safety. Secondly, “…when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee…” The Word of God is the perfect guardian of our days. Thirdly, “…when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.” The sweetest thought is that the Word of God becomes our companion.
Let us look at three thought from this expression.
I. WE SEE HERE THAT THE WORD OF GOD IS LIVING. “…it shall talk with thee.”
A dead book cannot talk. The Word of God is both a living and speaking book. Cf. Hebrews 4:12; I Peter 1:23
A. We say that the Word of God is living because it is pure truth.
- Error always brings death, only truth brings life.
B. The Word of God is living because it is the utterance of an unchangeable God.
- God will not speak today what He did not mean yesterday; neither will He blot out tomorrow what He records today.
II. GOD’S WORD IS PERSONAL. “…when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.”
A. “It shall talk with thee” about your need at present. Cf. Philippians 4:19
B. This book is so personal that it speaks to man in all states and conditions before God.
1. Isaiah 1:18; Matthew 11:28- Humanly speaking, the need for salvation hasn’t changed at all.
The same verses that apply to the need of the people during the time of Noah, of Isaiah, during
the time of Christ, of Paul, and the early church, are the same verses that we apply to the need of
people to be saved today.
III. THE HOLY SCRIPTURE IS VERY FAMILIAR “…it shall talk with thee.”
The Bible speaks plain and simple words that you can understand. Its promises are very clear and simple.
A. Romans 10:13 “ For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
B. Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto me and I will answer thee…”
C. Matthew 11:28 “Come unto me… and I will give you rest.”
