The character of the King when it is displayed in us does indeed shine forth in glorious splendor. For the normal fare of this life is vile; it is filled with hatred, with rampant sin and the filthiest of behaviors... it is selfish, it is prideful, it is arrogant and despises that which is true. This culture of death is terrifying in its reckless disregard for all things that are beautiful, that are good, that are right, that are honoring to God. And when the people of God walk in obedience we are set off against the blackness of this ruin like diamonds against sable... but the command here is NOT for us to not walk in sin, the command is that we should walk in peaceable quiet and respect. We are always to avoid sin, to obey God and to serve our fellow man... that is the basic guide to life for us. But Paul commands us to do this specifically without complaining and disputing (arguing)... it is here that we truly shine. For anyone can do the right thing for the wrong reasons and in the wrong manner, but it shows the heart of our God when we die to self and obey Him with a cheerful and joyous heart, and with a peaceable and pleasant demeanor. THIS stands out, THIS shows a heart that is different, THIS honors our God and Father!! Be a child of peace in the midst of reckless and cruel men, and see God use you for His glory!!
