It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.Hebrews 10:31
When we were unsaved sinners, the vengeance of a holy and just God may have been a truth which warned us to flee from the wrath to come and run for refuge in the outstretched arms of Christ, our Savior. Now that we have been saved by grace through faith in Jesus and His atoning sacrifice, we must still consider often the truth that God’s wrath will come upon the children of disobedience (Eph 5:6). God’s wrath is everlasting and unchanging because He is eternal and immutable. God does not turn off His wrath to demonstrate His love. God is love and God is just, consistent with all His holy attributes. As children of Christ, we consider the wrath of God with open eyes and grateful hearts, being recipients of His grace and mercy. The Lord Jesus suffered God’s unyielding wrath so that, trusting in His atoning sacrifice, we are no longer appointed unto wrath, but have obtained salvation through Jesus Christ, our Lord (1 Thess 5:9). Today’s reading in the Psalms tells us, “Truly no man can ransom another or give to God the price of his life” (Psa 49:7). The wealthiest, smartest, strongest descendant of Adam cannot ransom another or pay this price. Jesus Christ, however, is no mere man. He is God incarnate. As perfect Man, His holy life was sufficient to pay the penalty of God’s wrath, not for one life alone, but for all those who would trust in His precious substitute. Jesus suffered the vengeance of almighty God for our sakes. To dismiss the wrath of God as trite or trivial is to dishonor the Treasure of heaven, Jesus Christ, who endured far more than our eternity of ciphering can calculate.
God’s vengeance is a fearful thing, We all are in God’s hand; Yet, Jesus suffered, so we sing, For God became a Man.
