"The Name Jesus!" LD11 & Hebrews 4 This is the beginning of the 2nd division of the Apostolic Creed. God the Son who stands in human flesh and give us salvation as He walks the way of the cross. God's salvation is made known to us in His Son's name...JESUS! We approach His name in faith as the catechism lays out in this Lord's day in the confidence of Jesus being God's Son and our salvation!
Meaning: Many want to deem this Lord's day outdated and begs to question is Jesus the Son of God? We however know that the mysteries are not discernible to the naked eye but we see and believe by faith! We take the approach of faith and ask why do we call Him Jesus? God gives Him this name and it is most significant and important! Joshua had to lead the people into the promise land of Canaan. And God revealed His promise to the people in Joshua. His name is literally "Jehovah saves" and he was essentially named after Christ! If he could only have given the people the eternal rest we would not have to talk about the coming of Christ who is the one who can give this eternal rest! Another beautiful picture of the fulfillment of the new in the old testament.
Significance: The power is found in that name Jesus and God calls Jesus the first begotten among the dead and through Him He saves. God calls Him Jesus. His name because His name is what He does and what He is called to do. There is also a people who need to be saved and He is the head of the church and essentially calls the whole church in His name and in the blood of the Lamb! The second question and answer also here points the finger against "works righteousness" and we see Jesus as the COMPLETE Savior. We need nothing else or no one besides Him! Those that supplement or believe they have some good simply do not have Him as their Savior. It is Jesus or NOTHING! We can document that completeness of His salvation throughout all of scripture!
Purpose: It is complete and done! Finished! The only one that can accomplish this. The sweetest name we know! Even as His Son is called a Savior, so are we called and saved into glory in His name. And those who have Him have complete salvation as it is the truth of the gospel. We essentially sit with Him in the heavenly realm even now! New creations though still living in the body of the flesh and the old man of sin. No longer broken but made alive, holy, and blameless before God Almighty! How? Through His Son JESUS!
God called His Son Jesus and we confess Him to be our salvation as He raises us to glory!
I ask you only one question....do you know a name more sweeter than Jesus?
