We have thought of God, that He is sovereign, the great king over all.

That He is good has also occupied our thoughts.

There is much more of God we need to think of. For He is God. The prophet promises perfect peace to those whose mind is stayed on Jehovah God—on Him entirely, and the entire Him.

And the whole world cannot contain Him. Much less our little minds.

Think more of God’s goodness.

Jesus reminds a rich young ruler, and us, that No one is good but One, that is, God. (Matthew 19: 17a).

The Son of God, the Savior would point us all to the transcendence of God—that He is above all created reality in His existence and in His perfection.

Jesus’ sharp rebuke of one who calls Him Good Teacher is the good teacher’s clear and profound instruction in the truth of the Good God above. He is saying what God says through the prophet that there is no God besides me. There is none good but Him…and He is above.

Jesus’ rebuke, however, is not to lead a certain man, or any man away from Him to God. He calls the man, and all of us, after all, to follow Him.

Rather, He would teach us sinners who are prone to have earthly conceptions of Jesus to think more of Jesus as well as more of God. In other words, He would teach us to see beyond the humanity of Jesus, and by faith to behold in Him the brightness of the glory of God and all the fulness of the godhead dwelling in Him bodily.

In that body, in and with that humanity….God. God. With. Man.

This is the Christian truth we so desperately need to know and live out of in our day.

To know God above, the only Good God above, one must know this God, with us, teaching us, saving us…in Jesus Christ. In good Jesus. In the good God Jesus.

Mindful of that God, of that goodness above, of that goodness, that God-ness revealed and known in Jesus we shall know, through faith, God’s perfect peace.

We long, therefore, for a good cure for this pandemic, and to have our good liberties and good work restored, but so we make not gods of them. So we compare these good things not at all with the good salvation of our Savior Jesus, nor the good scientific or philanthropic men with the good God.

For Jesus, for God, we let all this world’s goods go, this mortal life also.

In Him alone, mind full of Him, is peace, perfect peace.

For such a time as this.
