John Calvin
It is fascinating to read these sermons by John Calvin, preached nearly 500 years ago, and set forth by a by a man who was a giant in Church History. They are full of evangelical zeal and fervor, and are as relevant to us today as if they were preached in our last Lord's day services. They also bear the hallmarks of the days in which Calvin lived and worked, hence we find him addressing the issues of the Reformation, but not addressing many of the matters that we might be facing today. Overall, I hope that prayerfully reading these discourses has brought me closer to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Initially I read them from the Banner of Truth facsimile edition, which was very difficult, and I think some of you will have spotted me wrestling with the spelling of many words. Monergism has an updated version which is freely downloadable and a big improvement. They say:

"As mentioned, John Calvin preached 200 sermons on Deuteronomy. They have been dropped down the memory hole. In 1583 a translation of them appeared in English. This was ignored, then forgotten. Over four centuries later (1987) the Banner of Truth Trust reprinted an English edition, which was barely readable in 1583 and worse in the facsimile copy...

"Recently this was put into the public domain. A dedicated woman voluntarily proofed the digital text, and then produced clean copy. The public can now read these sermons which have been ignored for 450 years. I want people to know about these remarkable documents.

"A big thank you to Lionel Dyck who helped me clean up the public domain copy and make it into an ebook."

I myself am deeply grateful that this work has done. It is my own intention to finish reading Calvin's sermons on the 10 commandments, onto audio files, but, perhaps another, so appointed, will even be able to read all of the 200 and post them on SermonAudio in days to come. There have been quite a few downloads showing the interest that people have to hear John Calvin.

They can be found on the Monergism website, under "Calvin, Deuteronomy".
