Wisdom is too high for a fool; in the gate he does not open his mouth. Proverbs 24:7
Mr. Spurgeon has said, “The law of God was more vindicated by the death of Christ than it would have been had all transgressors been sent to hell.” This, beloved, is the wisdom of heaven. Everything was created, all things exist, for God to make manifest the glorious truth of His only Son— incarnate, crucified, risen, ascended and coming again. This wisdom is so glorious that dusty man cannot grasp it except the Holy Spirit, by God’s grace, reveal it to our weak and worldly minds (1 Cor 2:14). The wisdom of the gospel is high, as lofty as the heart and mind of God Himself. The fool, therefore, who has said in his heart, “There is no God” (Psa 14:1), could not receive the gospel’s truth in love unless it be shown him by the effectual grace of the Spirit’s call. Yet, at the same time, the truth of the gospel is so simple that to reject its gift will silence every objection at the gates of heaven in the Day of Christ’s return. At heaven’s gate, when we shall see Jesus as He is because we will be like Him (1 Jn 3:2), even the fool who has rejected heaven’s wisdom will have the curtain pulled back, and he won’t see a little man pulling levers, as described in L. Frank Baum’s story of Dorothy in Oz, but he will behold the Messiah whom he has despised; and Christ’s glory will be so overwhelming that his mouth dare not open for fear of careless and shameful utterance. His knees will knock. His loins will loosen. His heart will melt within him like a wax figure hurled onto the surface of the sun. For we who have been saved by His grace, however, the same glory revealed to the reprobate will be revealed unto us with different consequences. Our mouths will open with perfect praise unto God in Christ. Our knees will bow most reverently. Our loins will be strengthened as they are girded with gospel truth. Our hearts will leap from the fire of unbridled passion and exaltation for our King of kings. Hallelujah! What a Savior!
