Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding. Proverbs 23:23
Certainly, what we have received from God, are receiving from Him, and will receive from Him, are all of grace. All we have is because of Christ Jesus, and comes by His unmerited favor. Yet, because God is sovereign, all His creation are subject to Him and responsible for every thought, action and behavior before Him. For those redeemed by sovereign grace, this truth is even more applicable. In today’s proverb, we are commanded to buy truth, wisdom, instruction and understanding. How does one buy them?
Again, it seems an odd and impossible mystery since Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). One cannot buy Christ or His free gift of salvation. Were this possible, the gospel would not be a gospel of grace and Simon the sorcerer wouldn’t have been rebuked by Simon Peter (Acts 8:18-23).
When we’re commanded to buy truth, as well as wisdom, instruction and understanding, we are to do so because we recognize, by God’s grace, the infinite and eternal value of Christ, the Truth, and His heavenly kingdom, the witness of truth (John 18:37). We are to give ourselves to the undertaking of pursuing truth to purchase truth, whatever the expense, whatever the cost, whatever the inconvenience, and to whatever extent of pain it may bring— even unto one’s own life. The Lord Jesus Himself said it in this way, “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:35-36).
Though we may abound in wealth and possess every benefit and blessing fellow man can lavish upon us, if we have not the truth of Jesus Christ crucified, risen, ascended and coming again, we have nothing.
Although a man has every gift This fallen world can give, For without Christ, his death comes swift, He’s wretched though he lives.
