"Spiritual Freedom" Romans 8:1-16 & Romans 6&8 (Pentecost Sunday) We do not turn to the narrative of the pouring out of the Spirit although we know it well....but we look at the Holy Spirit as the sanctifier today. We look at Romans as it speaks to our sanctification as the work of God in the child of God as His Spirit works live faith within us!
From what: Verse 2. Often we would define freedom negatively...not being in bondage and what it is NOT. We are set free from the law of sin and death. Our justification is being set free from the GUILT of sin, but also the POWER of sin! The law of sin and death is the power within us to sin and death. We are slaves to sin. We are set free from that power/dominion/prison house and the reign of sin as children of God and can no longer use it for an excuse to sin. We are now at liberty and free from it and its bondage.
How attained: How does this happen? "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free." And that same Spirit is poured into us and is also the power within us as it SANCTIFIES us! He died on the cross for us and the power of sin that convicts us is GONE! We now walk as children of God under the influence and the power of the Holy Spirit and we have LIVING life within us. The HOLY SPIRIT! It is the power that overcomes sin and death! We still have the influences of sin as we are still in the flesh with the struggle of the flesh to "give up its turf." And the Holy Spirit takes His abode within us and instructs us, binds us, and calls us to lead a sanctified and holy life! We are converted though we are in the flesh and have a quickening of the new man within us. The work of the Holy Spirit is always one as He justifies us in the fruits of the Spirit as we are sanctified by Him and walk in those fruits of the Spirit.
Purpose: "That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us." Christ has already fulfilled the law so what does that mean? The challenge of freedom begins now. He works within us continually to produce fruit as a result of the sanctifying of the Holy Spirit! This brings Pentecost into your and my everyday life! We now go about life in a sanctified life in everything we do that we have a joy and delight in everything we do. It's not all about us, but it is all about God! Sometimes we focus on us a little too much...but we live because Christ lives within us that every part of our being may be a song of praise and thanksgiving unto the living God.
We are in Christ Jesus and we have life!....and also PEACE that we will one day not have to battle the flesh, but will be with Him in Glory forevermore!
