“This is to be a permanent statute for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month, you shall humble yourselves and not do any work—whether the native or the foreigner who resides among you—” vs29
It is hard work to do no work for our salvation. To earn nothing and take everything as a free gift is more than the flesh can take! We must be in the Spirit.
God’s salvation is contrary to man; it is a gift to the undeserving through Christ work, not our own, and we must abide in it!
Rom 4:5, “But to the one who does not work, but believes on Him who declares the ungodly to be righteous, his faith is counted for righteousness.”
We never get beyond the cross and the finished work of Christ.
Secondly, Jesus did the work needed!
Because on this day atonement will be made for you to cleanse you, and you will be clean from all your sins before the LORD. vs30
He made atonement, and He satisfied justice. He answered the wrath of God and purchased salvation. He redeemed us by paying the ransom, and we get to go free without works of righteousness that we have done. He earned the Spirit and good works, which flow as we look to Him.
Afflict your flesh and believe on Christ: Trust Him from start to finish. Add nothing to His work and rest: This is faith.
Finally, Christ’s work was final [vs32-34].
This is to be a permanent statute for you, to make atonement once a year for the Israelites because of all their sins.” vs34
Once a year symbolizes the one time finished work of the cross, when He obtained eternal redemption.
He did not put away sins IF we did something: He put away sin for all who believe. The gospel is preached to the world, but the world of God’s elect will be saved.
“He will purify the tent of meeting [where we meet God] and the altar and will make atonement for the priests and all the people of the assembly [those elected but not yet called].” vs33
Faith is God’s gift for people for whom Christ died. The blood is not spilled in vain. Payment God cannot twice demand.
The Lord be with you as you rest in Christ: It will produce good works because it pleases and honors God.
→ We have a gospel of peace: Peace already made with God!
