The Hungry Nest

Psalms 81:10, I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.

Have you ever seen the pleasing sight of a mother bird bringing food to her young? The mouths of all within are open wide, eager and ready to receive the needed sustenance. There may be an allusion here in the text to the nest of the mother bird. God brought His people out of Egypt and cradled them under the shadow of His wings. Exodus 19:4, “Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself.” Deuteronomy 32:11-12, “As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.” The church is like a nest and God’s people are like feeble hungry birds. Many a nest has gone hungry through the frailties and struggles of the parent bird. How hard poor little mother birds have to work! But the One who feeds us is mighty. He is our shepherd we cannot want. “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32). “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19). Let us show ourselves His hungry people and He shall never cease to edify us through His holy word.

“You may easily over expect the creature, but you cannot over expect God: "Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it; "widen and dilate the desires and expectations of your souls, and God is able to fill every chink to the vastest capacity” (Thomas Case 1598-1682).
