Never Moved! Really?

Psalms 30:6, “And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.”

This clearly is wrong thinking. David acknowledges in these words his folly. It is not only the unconverted man who in his heart says, “I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity” (Psalms 10:6). Even the man of God can forget his dependence on God’s grace. When things are going well and all seems quiet and peaceful we must be careful to guard against complacency. To say today, “I am fit. I am well. I am busy. I am healthy. I am successful,” and all the while think it shall be so tomorrow, is not sanctified reasoning. In this world we can never promise ourselves any kind of perpetuity in health, wealth, success or even life. If we think thus, God will humble us by adversity and soon undeceive us, as He did to David. As Paul said, “Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12).

Instead of thinking we shall never be moved, it is right and proper to think we soon shall be moved. The truth is, we are going the way of all the earth and must soon depart this world. All shall be left behind and we will certainly be moved.

“Prosperity had evidently turned the psalmist's head, or he would not have been so self confident. He stood by grace, and yet forgot himself, and so met with a fall. Is there not much of the same proud stuff in all our hearts? let us beware lest the fumes of intoxicating success get into our brains and make fools of us also” (C. H. Spurgeon).
