Safe in the arms of the Lord

Deuteronomy 33:12, “.. The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.”

This is true of all the Lord’s beloved ones. The emphasis is upon their safety. The saint has a safe dwelling near to the Lord, for it says that he “shall dwell in safety by Him”. The Lord is never far away from His people in time of trouble. The Lord is only next door so to speak.

It is further added that the Lord provides a perpetual covering, “all the day long” for His child. This covering is God Himself, “he shall dwell between his shoulders.” The Lord is the shield of His people. As it is said in Psalm 91:4, “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.” Calvin thinks that the dwelling between shoulders is the picture of the child resting upon the chest of the parent, or being carried in the bosom. Whatever, loving protection is the truth set forth. Think of the place where John leaned his head. John 13:23, “Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.”

“Though Christians be not kept altogether from falling, yet they are kept from falling altogether” (William Secker died 1681)
