“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind ...” (Romans 12:2a) If ever there was a time of intense battle for supremacy of ideas, our generation manifests itself a mental war zone. Two recent discussions with total strangers made rather clear that climate change (the new name for global warming in the face of cooler years) was of paramount importance. Never mind that God said while the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease. The high priests of academia declared bovine flatulence a worldwide threat (among other sources such as their Mercedes diesel limos), and thus collectively we must address this threat. To ignore the oppositions of science falsely so called threatens our future, or so they say.
God through the Apostle Paul reminds us that the time is short, and they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away. See? Two simple passages of divine insight make this matter clear, and we need not fear their fear. We safely rest on God’s promise, while paying measured attention to pollution.
This approach, brethren, illustrates the headline passage above. Notice the key actions: not conform, transform, and renew. Conform means to adhere to a schematic, a purposeful plan. Be aware that the world has them, and they’ll ensnare you. The late Pas. Henry Mahan once preached a message, “Lost In A Cause”. His title says it all.
Rather, we are to be transformed, like a chrysalis to a butterfly, a complete change. Why such a radical change? Because the world has radically wrong ideas, and bad ideas have bad consequences.
Not only is the world radically wrong, but our minds are tainted, insomuch that God undertakes its complete renovation. We are to be casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. This holds true for allegedly science-based ideas which run in the face of God’s eternal promises.
