“And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD’S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses.” (Exodus 12:26-27a)
The annual Passover festival, enjoyed by every Jewish family, was rich in spiritual significance, foreshadowing better things to come. For instance, New Testament believers find a better atonement in that Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us, when God made His soul an offering for sin, being the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. The Passover was unique to Israel, making them different from others; likewise, the blood of Christ will purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God, making a holy separation from the world. But it doesn’t stop there.
Consider the import to the family, which is often ignored in our me-centered culture and in some churches. God has always dealt with families. He told Abram, in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed; again, to Jacob, in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed; and later to Jeremiah, I will take you one of a city, and two of a family. Peter preached that the promise is unto you, and to your children. Paul wrote that an unbelieving spouse is sanctified by the believing one, else were your children unclean, but now are they holy. Jesus told Zacchaeus this day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. God cares for families.
True, our children must be born again, since the children of the flesh are not the children of God. Yet Paul saw the house Stephanus addicted to the ministry of the saints, and mentored a young man who had a Godly mother and grandmother. There is hope for families.
Your first mission field is right in your own house! It does not matter if those youngsters are adopted, co-habitating cousins or grandchildren, use gospel signs such as the Lord’s Supper to start a conversation about the Lord. Think back: when did you first hear a Bible truth and cling to it? Teach when young minds are impressionable and trusting, and pray for the seed to blossom.
